I have done it.

I have completed my beloved trinity!

My triumvirate of musical goddesses I truly truly wanted to see perform live.

I am so happy.

The mighty, mighty Bjork. In London, April 2008

Natasha Khan, from Bat for Lashes. Manchester, June 2008

.

And tonight, just hours ago, I yelled & danced my head off to Miss Karen O’s

amazing performance with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs in Singapore.

Karen O.  Singapore, January 2010.

If they all kind of look alike, well they sort of do then. Actually

I don’t think they do – I just think they are so unique it shines through

in their dress sense. And I don’t like them because they look like that.

Because all three sound completely different,

but are so so so enthralling to listen to and watch. Bloody awesome music.

KAREN O, YOU KILLED IT TONIGHT! I BET YOU KILL IT ALL THE

TIME THOUGH!

Music is truly manna for the soul.

I feel so revitalised! Am still buzzing!

I truly am a happy girl tonight.

I am delirious!

:D

You probably would have guessed right now that

I’m in a music phase, an eternal phase, more like …

I’m drawn to tunes that sound

dreamy, uplifting, that make you feel like running in

a park filled with autumn leaves and bright blooms.

A light-filled exuberance is what I’m looking for these days!

And here’s the latest of my faves:

Jonathan Boulet.

Just 21-year-old.

Apparently did all his songs in his tiny garage studio.

Hey Sydney, this is a shout of to you, he is from your state,

if you still don’t know  :)

His debut album drops Dec 4 in Sydney itself,

with the album launch on Dec 3.

I’d gladly go to menyibuk if I could, young talents

tend to fascinate me a bit.

As well as music that sounds like this.

:)

.

I’m currently holing myself up in one of my best friends’

house. Ann has so kindly agreed to house me in her ‘Toh Resort’

while I get through this huge project I need to get done by a certain

time. Sometimes, when I find I cannot push through a mental inertia,

I need to rejig and challenge my brain and senses by escaping

somewhere. In this case I left home for Ann’s warm nurturing.

Don’t get me wrong, home’s warm too … it’s just that

sometimes you need to shake things up.

(In my case I think, perhaps worryingly, that my need for travel

or movement or change is displaying itself in

more ways than one. The can’t -keep-still factor isn’t

very helpful when you need to be doing work)

Anyway, Ann provided me with a comfortable room and some wonderful

cider every evening :)

Friends, what would you do without them.

Here’s her and her cider.

We’ve been friends for so long now, she knows even beforehand

whether I’d say a guy was hot or not.

“Ya, saya memang tahu itu lelaki jenis er…kegemaran kamu’,

she hilariously said recently at a screening at Palate Palatte when

I pointed someone out. LOL!

Don’t ask me why she said it in Malay, and why she couldn’t find

a decent translation for ‘the type you go for’.

But yeah.

Hey, help yourself to anything. This is your home too, you know,” she

said yesterday.

Thanks girl, love ya.

Keep forgetting about this, but how could I?

For those who haven’t been lucky enough to watch

Where the Wild Things Are yet, perhaps

you will be inspired by the awesome soundtrack to

get your hands on it, by hook or crook.

My travel buddies and I watched it on a quiet night out

in Roanoke, Virginia, after we had put laundry in

at the motel we were staying at and decided to go to

the nearest cinema.

It was worth the months of waiting, and I left the cinema that

night all happy and daydreamy.

The soundtrack, which I had been waiting for ever so eagerly is

so beautiful, I’m just even more in awe of Karen O.

Okay, so she collaborated with a bunch of other musicians,

but she is head honcho, thus Karen O and the Kids.

I like that she worked together with her ex-boyfriend, Spike Jonze,

on this dreamy vision of a movie. Genius loves company, as

they say, regardless of relationship cessation.

And this song … ah this song just makes my heart run laps around galaxies.

If you haven’t already guessed by now, I am so recommending

the full soundtrack for WTWTA.

It’s a definite buy, just like the soundtrack for Into the Wild.

Yes, both are wildly wonderful.

Both are the kinds of soundtracks you want playing when

you sit in the wilderness,

with the sunset casting all shades

of beautiful around you,

with butterflies dancing on the breeze,

with your hands nestled in the softest of grass,

with your mind and heart ten-storeys high.

xo

Empire State of Mind, indeed.

It just had to be Jay Z and Alicia Keys to come up with this

heartswelling anthem for New York, another in a long list

of love songs for the Big Apple.

I’m feeling all brand new and inspired indeed.

What if I just stay?

What if I just change all my plans, all at once?

What if?

xo

Yes folks, I eat when I’m happy, and I’ve been a-pigging it out plenty.

Wolfed down an awesome serving of Southern (well, Nawlins) Fried Chicken

AND a beignet a few hours ago.

The lack of updates is basically because I don’t live my life

on the Internet. Lah.

But some pictures and points today, that I can do.

It’s been amazing so far, this lil road trip.

With baby PJ in LA, before we headed out East.

Look at those eyes. She’s a mini Dakota Fanning, this beauty.

IMG_4294

Angie was in my last post, here are my other two roadtrip buddies -

Marc & Anis. How cute are they? ;)   These three have been

so wonderful. They have also been encouraging when it comes to

eating more,

talking to men (ahem)

and indulging my murderous moods.

IMG_4424

We have been driving a lot. But taking in all the gorgeous scenery,

and singing all kinds of songs on the way.

This is a sunset on the way from Phoenix,

Arizona, to Fort Stockton, Texas.

In New Orleans. I’ve been so inspired by this city, truly. And to think

we were initially going to skip this one – I would have been devastated!

IMG_4613

Live jazz and blues at the Apple Barrel bar, a little delight (and

dubbed as Frenchmen Street’s best-kept secret!) that

kept our grateful attention after a night of some misses. Musical heaven,

totally recommended.

This one deserves a posting or two all on its own.

A creation of the Make it Right project at the Lower 9th Ward in NO,

one of the worst affected areas. I’m all abuzz about what I’ve

been learning and thinking about Katrina, New Orleans, loyalty,

and love. Can’t wait to write about it.

Soon … soon enough :)

For now, it’s time to menghayati the travels to come.

Oh, random piece of info: I’m going to watch ‘Where the Wild

Things Are’ very soon! Yippeekayayyyy :)

Beyond excited because it seems like I’ve been waiting forever for

it to come out. I think I just may explode with joy

after watching it – and if you never hear from me again

it’s because I have died and gone blissfully to dreamyfilm heaven.

xo

PS-  Thank you so much for your e-mails, sweetness & suggestions,

you know who you are, and I’m most grateful. Will reply soon &

do give me your addresses – I’ll send postcards ;)

I know I'm supposed to be cool, but this is ridiculous

I know I'm supposed to be cool, but this is ridiculous

    … I giggled.

How ridiculously cute is this little cucumber presentation?

Out of the blue and so unexpected.

Just like many things in my life right now.

And just like that, just with a glance, I

    was happy.

    Additional factors of happiness?

  •     An interviewee who gives you hope, and who makes you smile
  •     A surprise letter from an anonymous blogger I respect. We will be having tea        & cake after I come back from US, how cool is that.
  •     I listened to The Sundays a lot today

      Well, that’s all it takes.

      I only needed three.

      And that cucumber definitely helped.

      Have a good Friday folks.

I was honestly going to write an entire essay

about why I’m not a fan of Lady Gaga.

    But then I got lazy.

    So I shall summarise.

It’s not that I hate Lady Gaga, mind you, it’s just that I thought

I was becoming a bona fide fan, and then after a while

this was to change rather drastically.

So before Gaga-ites prepare to crucify me I reiterate…

    I don’t hate her! I just … am not a fan

    lady_gaga_02

    Summary:

    1. I like that she always surprises. Boo-chak!

    Excitement is good.

    2. But OMG the woman should let her music and dress

sense do the talking. She cannot, I repeat, cannot speak.

Because every time she speaks, she sounds like the most

    pretentious, cliched little starlet/poptart ever.

Do whatever you like, it’s hot. Just can you not talk about it

too much? You lower your own points every time you try explaining

    it.

    Case in point:

    Quotes:

    OMG 1.

“If somebody said to me, ‘What you do isn’t art,’ I would say, They’re right. Yes it is, no it isn’t, absolutely, perhaps, it’s irrelevant, it’s important…that’s what this is all about, really. For me, more than anything, I want to do something important. It’s gotta be important. If it’s coming out of my mouth, if it’s going on my body, if it’s going on TV, it better be important.”

*With all due respect. You sing about Muh muh muh muh poker face and Just just just just Dance. I love ‘em, they’re awesome to dance to, they are catchy. But it’s not exactly world or life-changing subjects, thank you very much.

    OMG 2.

“I feel like I have so much to do… My true legacy will be the test of time, and whether I can sustain a space in pop culture and really make stuff that will have a genuine impact.”

*Again, with all due respect, even Madonna, U2 and MJ didn’t come out talking about their legacy and impact. Hello, if you are going to be iconic, you don’t have to talk about things like that. People will do it for you. Perasan much?

    OMG 3

“Being a woman in the pop world, sexuality is half poison and half liberation. What’s the line? I don’t have a line. I am the most sexually free woman on the planet, and I genuinely am empowered from a very honest place by my sexuality. What’s more primal than sex? I mean, it’s so honest. If I didn’t think I had the talent to back that up, I wouldn’t have done it.”

    * Cone-shape bra? Madonna did it. Being sexually free as empowerment? This concept has been explored by songstresses like Madonna (again) and Tori, to Janet and Lil Kim. Just because you don’t know how to wear pants does not mean you are now front line diva of Sexual Empowerment.

    OMG 4

“I just shot these art films called ‘crevettes’. That’s what I call them. It means shrimps, in French. And shrimps are small, but decadent and tasty, which is how I think my films should be.”

*Listen, I know your videos are pretty entertaining and are quite out-there music videos…but even the most inspiring videos out there have not been labelled ‘ART FILMS’ by the singers or bands. Even Bjork, who has some insanely gorgeous videos out there, has not called her own stuff ‘ART FILMS’, in fact she is quite happy to let her directors (like Gondry) take credit for their artistry. Get over yourself.

    OMG 5

“If I decide to make a coat red in the show, it’s not just red. I think: is it communist red? Is it cherry cordial? Is it ruby red? Or is it apple red? Or the big red balloon red? I mean there’s like so many fucking different kinds of red. And so you have to say, well, what are we trying to say in this scene? Is it a happy red? Or a sad red? Is it a lace red? Or a leather red? Or a wool red? It’s like there are so many components to making a show and making art, and my school taught me how to think that way.”

*Someone just give me a gun now so I can shoot myself in the head.

    OMG 6

“This is all part of a movement. My artistry is much deeper than fashion or anything like that: I love pop music, and I want to bring it back.”

    * She’s obviously inspired by art collectives like Warhol’s ‘Factory’ and all, but I would hardly call her Haus of Gaga (Subpoint OMG) a ‘movement’. And oi, as exciting as you are, pop music is around, you are not reviving anything.

    OMG 7

“Lady Gaga is a lie. I am a lie, and every day I kill to make it true.”

    *   ……..        -_-

    Can anybody spell…. pretentious?

    lady-gaga-blind-fold-03

    Pix from JustJared.com

I know there are a lot of Gaga fans out there so I’m going to make

    a peace offering.

    1) I love that her performances are always so in-your-face interesting. You can’t help but watch.

     2) Her “art”, while I grimace at some “conceptual fashion pieces”, can be pretty wonderful to look at. I’d rather be entertained than bored by one’s garb, I guess.

     3) Her tunes are so catchy it’s just wonderfully fun to sing them. Muh muh muh muh! Papa-paparazzi! I swear there was one week I couldn’t stop saying ‘let’s have some fun this beat is sick, I wanna take a ride on your disco stick’.

     4) She had to really work to get where she is, and she’s still really busting her chops, travelling everywhere like a mad woman and working all the time on her clothes, performances, collaborations. Got to respect the dedication.

     5) She’s got a really nice posterior. I’m just saying. Probably one of the nicest in music-dom!

So basically, I do quite enjoy her work.

I just wish … she would just not talk about it.

Cause she sounds like a major inflated dumbass i would

like to clobber when she does.

    There, I’ve said it.

    Jangan marah, you.

I’ve just been completely enamoured by BFM, I just had to shout

    it out loud.

The name ‘The Business Station’ sounds like a stack of boring

paper-cut worthy reports on profit margins or what have you, but

boy is the channel (at 89.9 Mhz) anything but.

I’m almost ashamed I took so long

to latch on to it, but it was pretty much love at first sound bite.

I had heard it mentioned once or twice but my curiosity got piqued

further when fellow columnist and writer Uma described it to me.

Lo and behold, on the very first day I listened to it,

I heard about some podcast-like interviews about derivatives (they

made advice and explanations about rather tolerable for a finance

dunce like me) and other financial subjects which were very

    informative and enjoyable.

The interviewers may sound a bit stiff sometimes (although I think it is

somewhat adorable at times too), and their newscasters, bless their

cotton socks, make many boo boos in delivery, but oh what a good

    job they are doing overall.

Good Music. And Information. That’s what I like from a radio station.

On both counts BFM delivers big time.

On the first few days I listened, these were the music choices they played.

[And with no irritating adverts (yeah so catch them NOW)]

Pearl Jam, Lemonheads, Soundgarden (rather grunge right? wait up..)

and then Oasis, Radiohead (very Brit innit? wait up..)

then there was (deep breath) ….

Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell, Eurythmics, Rolling Stones,

Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix, Velvet Underground and so many other

gems that I could just roll up into a ball of joy and die.

If you know your lagu-lagu (they don’t tell you who and what is

playing), it is an orgasmic musical experience.

And if you don’t, it still sounds pretty damn fine.

Today, mommy and daddykins, I also learned about the Royal

    Belum State Park!

Yes, you can imagine me grinning toothily like a 5-year-old while I say

    that.

I also learned that our crazy granddaddies went off to the forest to get

a specimen of the Javan Rhino in 1932, shot one, skinned, stuffed

and mounted it up in our museum, only to find out later that it was

    Malaysia’s Very. Last. One.

    Pause. (Sound of crickets)

    Can anyone say Epic Fail?

At the risk of sounding like an acronym junkie, I hereby

    declare BFM FTW!

(Note for newbies: ‘For the win’, not the older ‘F*ck the

    world’ meaning)

    images

Here’s more about the station from their website:

    How It All Began

It was year 1983 and a young Malaysian arrived in London to pursue his further studies. That was where he first found great radio. Capital Radio 95.8, London’s most popular contemporary hit station, LBC, UK’s leading  talk radio station  and Laser 558, the infamous pirate station broadcasted from a boat in the North Sea, were leaders in their respective niches and provided rich inspiration.

Malek Ali kept track of the Malaysian radio scene ever since, watching the birth of Time Highway Radio in 1994, arguably Malaysia’s first attempt at a contemporary hit station. The following year, MEASAT Broadcast Networks (now Astro) announced the launch of six brand new FM stations, bringing to our shores what is known as format radio or radio stations designed for specific demographics.

Fast forward to 2008. Malaysian listeners have responded enthusiastically to format radio, Astro achieved tremendous success through the strict application of format radio, its 8 stations now have 67% revenue market share. Media Prima is hot on Astro’s heels with HotFM and Fly FM, whereas Star has made inroads in the radio market with RFM98.8, Red104.9 and Suria. Time Highway Radio, the format pioneer, was pummeled by Astro and retreated to the Indian-language format and is now itself owned by Astro.

But format radio, really now in its 14th year, has taken a toll on the quality of the radio conversation. A common complaint of thirty to fifty somethings is that there appears to be nothing intelligent on radio. Radio DJs commonly talk down to their audience. Breakfast show topics are reduced to trivial, inconsequential topics. Many mature listeners wish for the return of the quality conversation along the likes of Radio 4′s Patrick Teoh and Yasmin Yusoff.

And this is where BFM steps in.

I’m hoping the station mencapai kejayaan dan kecemerlangan big time but

I also hope that when the advertisers come in they don’t start praying to the

Gods of Mediocre Tunes and dumb themselves down.

    I’m all okay with the

Oh Hai I Likes, You Likes, Tee Hee Hee - kinda entertainment,

    but I mean come on,

think we have well enough of those.

I wish I had written about them sooner, because

I have forgotten some things about the night,

but hey, better late than never.

It was Tuesday, July 28th, and I wanted to have a drink.

But by myself, and with some good music.

Thankfully, there was the perfect place for it, so I

happily took off for this gig called In-Transit, held at Urban

    Attic in Capsquare.

Truth be told I think most music events are better dihayati

when you are alone, because chit-chatting can ruin

the whole thing. “Oh oops, you mean the entire set

    is over? D’oh!”

    <3 the lights

    <3 the lights

I liked that Urban Attic had some of those light installations

we saw at the Light Show in Annexe a while back. The ones here

were those made by recycled materials, and true enough, they

fit perfectly in the bar/club atmosphere the way Ashes and I thought

they would. Was a pleasant surprise to see them here. Nice one.

    Waiting for the start

    Waiting for the start

I actually wanted to listen to Citizens of Ice Cream play,

I had heard their music before but never really

    listened.

The gig was called In-Transit, because it was actually a warm up

show for COIC and Nao, and other international bands, for

their Music Terminals Festival gig in Taipei the next day.

Since some of the bands were flying in to KL before Taipei,

it was a chance for Citizens of Ice Cream and Nao to

praktis lah sikit, with other festival mates such as

Melbourne-based The Stabs, The Holy Soul and Cuba is

    Japan (What a name!).

I couldn’t stay for the Melbourne bands unfortunately, it

was getting rather late when citizens finished their set,

but I was glad I caught them.

    brilliant

    brilliant

It was perfect material for anyone in a dreamy, slightly

    melancholic, reflective mood, I’d say.

The crowd (not too many people, not too little) was

obviously there for the music, and it was wonderful to see

all those attentive heads bopping gently, feet tapping.

Perhaps this kind of music is not everyone’s cup of tea,

but there is something about some of Citizen’s

songs that send me on a cloud.

(Incidently they have an album cover with clouds on it too)

Very soundtrack worthy, some of the songs

reminded me of movies like The Eternal Sunshine

of the Spotless Mind. I also had

some visions of Rene Magritte’s works, which

I really like and hung up on my dorm walls (both during

    undergrad and my masters)

I have no clever things to say about why I like

Magritte, truth is I don’t fancy the more serious,

psychoanalytical pieces like The Rape .. I

put him up on my walls because I loved the way he used

the sky so much, and the blue and white pieces (sometimes

with doves.. and of course that bowler hat man)

They were so simple and yet so mysterious. They reminded me

    of dreams. Of flying.

    Anyway, I digress.

Yes. So that was why some Citizen’s songs appealed

to me. Listen to their stuff on their myspace page

    or here for an example.

I had entered Urban Attic that day a little forlorn and

a little tired, and I left there with a spring in my step.

    Intensely daydream-worthy.

    Fuel for reflection.

Washes over you like little waves.

    Like a Rene Magritte painting.

    :)
