Sometimes I compare lifestyles. And different countries.

Not too long ago my girls and I were having this debate about the lifestyle

in Australia versus London/New York. The girls who were living in OZ

were insisting that Down Under is very, very different in terms of lifestyle because

people take work/play balance very seriously and you would find much cooler,

laid back, happier employees there.

Basically, once it is the end of the work day, that’s it. Bye!

Don’t you dare mess with my leave! Unheard of!

It’s my holiday – and that’s that, bye!

Having never lived in Oz, but with a bit of experience staying in London and

the US, I’d say London would come second, and then America next. (In terms

of the countries I have known lah).

Oh sorry, I think little countries like Gibraltar and those in the Meditteranean

areas are wayyyyyy more laid back. In Gib, where everybody knows your name,

the days are like this – Work. Home. Beach or Work. Beach. Home. Or during

the weekends. Beach Home Beach Home.

You get the idea. They’d top the list I think. That’s why so many of my Gib

friends are still surfers, artists, even cab drivers. They are not obsessed about

money – they just want to make enough and then hang at the beach.

.

Anyway, I don’t know even why I started this post now. Haha.

Oh. Okay. It’s just that he keeps sending me all these pictures from London,

everyday.

The commons

Our tree - the weeping willow. But it's a happy willow!

My bridge in the distance. All mine

And I feel a bit lame, because this is what I send him …

The Converse/David Corio do at ZincArt

Okay, so I exaggerate. I do send him other pictures too, of my darling friends

and I. And the last shot was not for him really, I was just showing that

beautiful iPhone app to someone, as usual.

But you get what I mean.

Feels so… lame. Drinking, party, oh boy wooo hooo, shoot me now.

Maybe I just need to get back to nature.

Stat!

xo

Yesh this will be a not so short but sweet posting.

I hope lah.

Feeling like I wish I was more free to just keep

on writing & writing, but the days & things to do just

keep on piling and piling.

Apologies if I have not replied any e-mails or msgs,

want to do justice to them, truly!

For those who know,

things are a-changing and that just equals more

stuff to do. Exciting nonetheless, I’m not complaining.

Recently saw this at SS2. Wonder if it’s their new plan

for added security in “hot” crime places or something.

Thing is the two cops inside looked like they were absolutely

DYING of boredom. They were just sat there, looking at everyone

and everything, awkwardly facing out, not talking, not reading

anything. Even if it is their job, I think I’d be okay with them doing

a bit of self-improvement or what have you with decent books

or newspapers, or something? Anything? If nothing is happening lah.

Or should they just be doing more patrols?

IMG_1071

Oh I don’t know. I just didn’t like the looks of them just …

sitting there.

Someone pass them some inspirational novels or

summat, quick.

Went to see Short & Sweet 2009 with Wai Li at KLPac on

Thursday and it was an enjoyable night.

Thank you Jon Chew, who was so kind to gift tickets!

Known him from his reportah days

and now he acts as well, he was in one of the 11 ten-minute

plays this time around.

For those who have not heard of Short & Sweet:

This innovative and fresh theatre festival features ten-minute plays that showcase the best of Malaysia’s established and emerging writers, directors and actors. For more information go to http://www.shortandsweetmalaysia.org/ or KLPac’s page (They are running till August 16)

Wasn’t going to do this but I might as write a little

personal review for meself, since I have

the play list in front of me now.

Sorry no pictures, they weren’t allowed.

Think I shall refrain from directly critiquing the ones I thought

were a little rough, and just give a nod to the ones I really enjoyed.

I’d venture to say the stronger parts were in the second half

or near the end, for there were several in the beginning

that I though were hampered by the inclination for either

the playwrights or actors to want to people-please,

either by over-acting or putting in lines that angle for

cheap laughs. I don’t mean to sound harsh but it just really

is that – the tendency to want to engage the crowd by

adding a gay/sex/curse/aiyo factor to elicit an intended

response from the crowd.

While it often works, I don’t see how the roars of laughter

enhance or add meaning of the piece, especially

when humor does not go or is ill-fitted to what they are

trying to say.

At other times I thought while the execution and acting were

brilliant (for instance in “For the love of… beans”)

the story line and message worked itself up to

a crescendo only to leave one just a wee bit disappointed.

Truly nice accents (You Texan folk, you!) and performances

for that one though (high energy levels).

I spied with my little eye KLue’s Claudia Low in that, which I

hadn’t expected, so it was nice to watch her vamping it up in the

play.

For the love of beans:

Playwright: Jude James

Director: Kevin Larken

Viewpoints was a touching piece, and I think

Wai Li’s favourite, no?

It was about a man who looks after special children

in a home, and he talks about each children

with much care and affection. He speaks about

them in a lot of detail, so much so that it starts to

feel … perhaps a bit draggy? But then this then allows

you to get hit with the realisation later,

when he relays his

own questions about what will happen to the boys

once they grow up and have to leave.

How will they cope?

How will the world understand them and their worlds?

This all comes rather quickly (but elegantly) in comparison with

his earlier languid cerita-cerita about the boys.

Nice touch.

Also in the cast for this one was Roger, who was with Mark Teh

and the 5 Arts Crew in Penang for Gostan Forward. Another

surprise, and a pleasant one, because he was such an interesting

character to behold in Penang, and was a little scene stealer here.

Viewpoints:

Playwright: Martyn James Fellender

Director: Kimmy Kiew

The last two I shall list here were my favourites,

and not just cause Jon acted in the last one!

They both dealt with relationships.

When the lights first came on for Unsaid,

I grimaced. Oh no, not another gay-themed play, just to

camp it up and pull in the laughs. (Which happens a lot these

days) But boy was I wrong.

I think of all plays Unsaid did the best, within the 10 minutes,

to balance entertainment (humour, cuteness) with message

(why does one find difficulty in saying ‘I Love You’?).

The beautiful thing is that the couple discussing the

topic in question (played adorably by .. oh I don’t know

their names!) were gay, but this discussion could have been

had by any couple, of any age, anywhere.

So they kept the cute factor up (oh we can’t show the affection

we want in public etc) but also asked the right questions.

(“Are you using your abandonment issues as an excuse

for your commitment issues?”)

Adorable, and not overdone. Just right.

Unsaid:

Playwright: Nandang Abdul Rahman

Director: Kelvin Wong

And for the one Jon was in, Fuckin’ Food, I don’t know

how many times Wai Li and I (and everyone else) were giggling

and muttering ‘omg’. Anyone’s everyone has had arguments

this couple was having. [Couple. In Car. Arguing. Over...

What to eat??] Just how the argument transpired and morphed

into other bouts of ridiculousness – it was so real, Wai Li

whispered “Omg that’s me”, just as I was thinking every girl

and every guy on planet earth has had one of these sessions

before. The ridiculous argument starts out of no where,

and then ends just like that too. (Well, not exactly always

ends like that, i guess!) Extra points for the charming

car noises (left turn, engine start, doors slamming) LOL!

Fuckin’ Food

Playwright: Kevin Larken

Director: Christopher Ling

I loved some of the topics the other plays were exploring,

though I think the message or issues were perhaps not

formed well enough or delivered effectively and thus,

there was no punch. Oomph, as they call it.

The ones like these were Shelter, (a close relationship

that on paper, is “unhealthy”, is better than a “proper”

relationship which is unloving and unaware), Concealed

(using make-up or the concealer to disguise your anguish

or scars) and Poo By Any Other Name Smells As Bad

(Supporters/activists of oppositional who have questionable

motives and reasons for their actions).

All in all though, all actors had great enthusiasm and obvious

dedication to their roles. For 10-minute plays, where you have only

so much time to deliver your intro, message, come up with good

ending and entertain, it must a big challenge for all the playwrights,

directors and actors to come up with their pieces.

A challenge met.

Will be looking forward to Short and Sweet next year.

Everyone say hello to dear Seven again, who has been away

for quite a while, undergoing repairs.

Now I can take nicer shots, though I must say

my iPhone has been doing a wonderful job and the

Polarize ap (recommended by Justin ‘Goontat’ Ong!) has

been nothing short of inspiring.

Our news never tell us the whole truth. Our politicians veil their threats. Our friends are too polite with us. When we criticise, we choose the sweetest words. When we confess our feelings, we drop hints instead. So many things we don’t dare say aloud, or don’t know how to. Religion. Race. Politics. Sex. Desires. Love. So we are left to expressing ourselves in between the lines.

The Annexe Gallery and Central Market are proud to present “Between The Lines”, featuring 14 artists who draw lines that conceal and reveal at the same time. For those interested in young artists, many of the works are sold at prices ideal for beginner collectors.

Participating artists include: Adila Abdul Malik, Alexdrina Chong, Chu Yuan, Dura, Fathullah Luqman, Fennie Chin, Jerome Kugan, Jun Kit, Maya Tan Abdullah, Nani Kahar, Norman Teh, Saiful Razman, Shahril Nizam, and Sharaad Kuttan.

I’m late for this but the Fascination level is 8 out of 10 for this

one, because I’m hoping to see Dura, Norman Teh and Alexdrina Chong’s

works up close.

Ah, Annexe.

Might as well camp out there this whole week and beyond then.

Back from my beloved island Langkawi (yes, it’s mine),

and I knew I wasn’t looking forward to being back when:

1) I felt like clobbering the entire big ass family who potong-ed the

airport queue in every way and angle possible

2) I felt like clobbering the woman sitting next to me who

decided her Bollywood Soundtrack on her phone was just what

I wanted to hear as well

3) I felt like clobbering the pre-pubescent teen who had a jolly

good time kicking my chair before I hissed at her

4) Felt like clobbering the guy who tailgated my trolley -

he stopped just in time, was about to do my no-shadow-kick

5) Felt like clobbering an assortment of other individuals before

I finally left the airport, for all sorts of reasons that don’t

really make much sense

My, my, somebody’s feeling hormonal.

I’m never too happy leaving Langkawi, and when I’m on my

beautiful island, everything just shuts off. I relax. I sleep … a l o t.

On Monday, I clocked approximately 14 hours sleep.

It was mighty fine catch-up-sleeping, and I was grateful.

But now I’m back and cranky.

Back to work.

However, I am looking forward to some events coming up.

One of them is the Shameless Covers Night on Friday.

I like that it has the word Shameless in it, that implies

that diaorang tak malu sungguh in the best possible way dan

condifen with I’m sure will be a noble effort.

I also like covers, because I get to show my memory off,

remembering lyrics (the only memory that is oklah, boleh tahan sikit)

and can try and outVOLUME the actual singers.

Did I just say that out aloud?

Please don’t ban me, I love you.

Anyway, here are the details below, the ‘official’ pictures for

the event ….

and then the er, outtakes.

What a super talented bunch, can’t wait to hear me sabo  them croon.

Wow, maybe I'll throw a cat onstage. That will befuddle them. Then I'll come in with a tune from Evita!

Warning: Laughing too hard can cause belly-aches, a spinning head and a sense of euphoria.

In the line up are Australia’s Greg Fleet and Hung Le, and our

very own Douglas Lim.

Actually, I am going on the basis of a personal confidence that

Lim will perform well. Somehow I have

the utmost faith that he is going to be good at what he sets out

to do. He’s one of those effortless performers, I think.

Got tix for Friday’s show, barring anything unexpected.

See you there!

xo

I don’t think I can say just how much I respect people

who devote so much of their free time to children and animals -

the most innocent and beautiful of God’s creatures, I think

(sorry humans and er, plants)

A visit on Sunday to the  Furry Friends Farm in Rawang was the

welcome reminder again that there is good in this world,

and oh man, is it so beautiful to behold sometimes.

I went with Sara and her friends for a ‘volunteer day’, where

we basically help them clean whatever they need, wash the

dogs or surroundings etc.

The Furry Friends Farm basically looks after these

stray and abandoned dogs & cats, and recently were involved

in the rescue and care of the dogs abandoned by the residents

of Pulau Ketam. I’m sure you’ve heard of the horrific

case, and if not please read this and this. So proud of kawan

TV Smith for what he did for those dogs, truly.

It took us quite a while to get to the farm – truth be told I’m not sure

I remember getting there again on my own.

But we go there around around 1-something (?) and

the dogs apparently already were cleaned by an earlier batch

of volunteers. Gosh darn, rather disappointed, was

ready to get all close to the doggies.

And so … we were asked instead to clean the cat compound at

the back. Miao! It was very much smaller than the entire

dog compound of course.

However we did of course get to mingle with many of

the farm’s dogs. The Pulau Ketam dogs were in cages

(because they still need vaccinations and extra care), the

other strays were separated into sections, and there were

many, many other dogs also running all around us, being

all cute and kepoh (nosy) everywhere.

I think most of these dogs were the ones well accustomed to

human interaction already, and comfortable, rather obedient

and friendly, thus their freedom. There were also cycles I think,

because it was impossible to let all the dogs roam around at the

same time, (and some just finished their bath, had to dry off),

thus different batches of dogs happily strutting here and there.

Anyway, here are the pictures. Bigger ones this time,

because the dogs are oh-so-cute. I’m sure I’m not

spelling some of these names right, but these were

some pretty unforgettable dogs.

IMG_0654

IMG_0614

I don’t know her name, but boy was she a beauty. But look at that

awful scar - her previous owner wrapped wire around her snout to shut her

up. Felicia said it best when she whispered to Beauty ‘Look at that

face, how could anyone do this to you?’ She was so adorable, but

shy – she seemed to look down a lot. Perhaps rather wary of

humans, and I don’t blame her at all.
IMG_0612

This one was so manja (affectionate) he stayed with us for ages,

demanding pats and scratches and loving, which he promptly

got. No problemo, Bobby! I got a bit of a twang when I was told

his name was Bobby – my second dog, and the one that died

in my arms when I was about 15 or so … his name was Bobby.
IMG_0598

Cantik, or Chantek, is one of the dogs rescued from Pulau Ketam.

My, my, look at that coquettish face. Cantik (Beautiful/Pretty)

is right indeed. Pleased to report that the volunteers said

the dogs were doing very well, and were gaining weight.

Hurrah to that!

IMG_0597

Joy has no chin (you may not see it properly here) Read his sad

and horrific story (with pictures) here. Look at him now. Thank you so much

FFF, thank you.

IMG_0596

This dog was SO super manja it was almost funny. Lady was going

around, nudging and nudging for some loving. And the

volunteers kept on saying “Look, she’s so ‘teh’! She’s sooo ‘teh!’

(Cantonese for ‘manja’). This man eventually lifted her up

for hugs because she was so relentless. You go girl ;)

IMG_0595

Hahaha, how could you not smile at this face?

Chestnut was waddling around after his lunch, with

half his food on his face. He would disappear for a while

and then come back with even more bits of rice

all over! Definitely subscribes to the principle: “When

there’s food, whack the sh*t out of it, cause you never

know where your next meal’s coming from.”

IMG_0659

This is Linda aka Cat Lady, who supervised us for the cleaning of

the entire cats area. I won’t ruin your brekkies/lunches/dinner,

so I will spare you the details of the excrement excavation that

we had to do for quite a bit. All I can say is that it. was. gross.

And they say cat poo is stankier than dog’s poo. I think that

to be true, actually, though I don’t know exactly why/how.

Ok enough with that. Sorry, moving along now.

IMG_0658

These are four ladies taking a much deserved cigarette break. Darling sara

(and kind co-ordinator of our lil group) is on the left.

IMG_0657

These were the absolutely adorable dogs. The smaller ones that look

at you with these big HUG-ME-I-SO-CUTE eyes, and the ones

I’m a sucker for. Gush.

IMG_0656

Well hello there beautiful. Also one of the Pulau Ketam dogs.

I have forgotten his name, but this one was so cheerful

the volunteer went ‘Go ahead, he’s a friendly one’, and true

enough he licked my hand, tail wagging furiously.

IMG_0655

This is closer to the ‘entrance’, where many of the newcomers are.

Joy was in this bunch too, though.

IMG_0653

Here’s where all of us relaxed and played with the dogs for a while

before heading off, where we were kindly given hot barley

drinks by the volunteers. The way the volunteers interacted

with the dogs were so touching – they were coo-ing to them,

talking to them, calling out all their names – I was quite moved

by the whole thing. Tabik, seriously. (Salute)

IMG_0616

It was time to go, and we got a walk to the door by this darling over

here. He was tempang, you know, but look – how wonderful

and warm that face is. As we closed the gates, he stayed there,

as if saying Goodbye.

If you would like to go to the volunteer day or get more

information about FFF, please visit their website

or write to me and I’ll try to help you as much as I can.

We bought supplies for them (food and shampoo, etc)

but you can alternatively make a donation, of course.

Or how about the event below?

Unfortunately I somehow cannot make all the dates,

(Dang it!) but do go or make a contribution if you can.

The first one starts … tomorrow night.

one bow-wow one heart poster

Once again. God bless you, Furry Friends.

Thank you so much.
