I wish I had written about them sooner, because

I have forgotten some things about the night,

but hey, better late than never.

It was Tuesday, July 28th, and I wanted to have a drink.

But by myself, and with some good music.

Thankfully, there was the perfect place for it, so I

happily took off for this gig called In-Transit, held at Urban

Attic in Capsquare.

Truth be told I think most music events are better dihayati

when you are alone, because chit-chatting can ruin

the whole thing. “Oh oops, you mean the entire set

is over? D’oh!”

I liked that Urban Attic had some of those light installations

we saw at the Light Show in Annexe a while back. The ones here

were those made by recycled materials, and true enough, they

fit perfectly in the bar/club atmosphere the way Ashes and I thought

they would. Was a pleasant surprise to see them here. Nice one.

Waiting for the start

Waiting for the start

I actually wanted to listen to Citizens of Ice Cream play,

I had heard their music before but never really

listened.

The gig was called In-Transit, because it was actually a warm up

show for COIC and Nao, and other international bands, for

their Music Terminals Festival gig in Taipei the next day.

Since some of the bands were flying in to KL before Taipei,

it was a chance for Citizens of Ice Cream and Nao to

praktis lah sikit, with other festival mates such as

Melbourne-based The Stabs, The Holy Soul and Cuba is

Japan (What a name!).

I couldn’t stay for the Melbourne bands unfortunately, it

was getting rather late when citizens finished their set,

but I was glad I caught them.

It was perfect material for anyone in a dreamy, slightly

melancholic, reflective mood, I’d say.

The crowd (not too many people, not too little) was

obviously there for the music, and it was wonderful to see

all those attentive heads bopping gently, feet tapping.

Perhaps this kind of music is not everyone’s cup of tea,

but there is something about some of Citizen’s

songs that send me on a cloud.

(Incidently they have an album cover with clouds on it too)

Very soundtrack worthy, some of the songs

reminded me of movies like The Eternal Sunshine

of the Spotless Mind. I also had

some visions of Rene Magritte’s works, which

I really like and hung up on my dorm walls (both during

undergrad and my masters)

I have no clever things to say about why I like

Magritte, truth is I don’t fancy the more serious,

psychoanalytical pieces like The Rape .. I

put him up on my walls because I loved the way he used

the sky so much, and the blue and white pieces (sometimes

with doves.. and of course that bowler hat man)

They were so simple and yet so mysterious. They reminded me

of dreams. Of flying.

Anyway, I digress.

Yes. So that was why some Citizen’s songs appealed

to me. Listen to their stuff on their myspace page

or here for an example.

I had entered Urban Attic that day a little forlorn and

a little tired, and I left there with a spring in my step.

Intensely daydream-worthy.

Fuel for reflection.

Washes over you like little waves.

Like a Rene Magritte painting.

Oh how I’ve missed you, boy.

Everyone say hello to dear Seven again, who has been away

for quite a while, undergoing repairs.

Now I can take nicer shots, though I must say

my iPhone has been doing a wonderful job and the

Polarize ap (recommended by Justin ‘Goontat’ Ong!) has

been nothing short of inspiring.

It’s already August, my my.

Two weeks left before puasa, if I’m not mistaken?

Anyhow, lots of interesting events coming up.

Hope to see you lot in some, or all of them perhaps?

I’ll try not to be the geeky one taking notes.

Or the one dropping hors d’oeuvres on the floor,

pretendin it’s art.

Our news never tell us the whole truth. Our politicians veil their threats. Our friends are too polite with us. When we criticise, we choose the sweetest words. When we confess our feelings, we drop hints instead. So many things we don’t dare say aloud, or don’t know how to. Religion. Race. Politics. Sex. Desires. Love. So we are left to expressing ourselves in between the lines.

The Annexe Gallery and Central Market are proud to present “Between The Lines”, featuring 14 artists who draw lines that conceal and reveal at the same time. For those interested in young artists, many of the works are sold at prices ideal for beginner collectors.

Participating artists include: Adila Abdul Malik, Alexdrina Chong, Chu Yuan, Dura, Fathullah Luqman, Fennie Chin, Jerome Kugan, Jun Kit, Maya Tan Abdullah, Nani Kahar, Norman Teh, Saiful Razman, Shahril Nizam, and Sharaad Kuttan.

I’m late for this but the Fascination level is 8 out of 10 for this

one, because I’m hoping to see Dura, Norman Teh and Alexdrina Chong’s

works up close.

Ah, Annexe.

Might as well camp out there this whole week and beyond then.
